Naranjilla or Lulo
Native to the Andean countries, the fruit measures approximately 4 to 8 cm in diameter and grows between 1,200 and 2,100 meters above sea level in temperate climates (17-20°C), preferably in moist, fertile soils with good drainage.
The fruit is used in juices, concentrated foods, desserts, jams, and ice cream, among others, due to its pleasant sweet and sour flavor. It is an important source of phosphorus and vitamin A.
Lulo is a semi-wild plant that grows in artificial ecosystems, especially in cool, shaded areas with good humidity (understories in the lower reaches of primary forests). Under these conditions, the plant is lush, very green, and vigorous.
